It’s known for sun and sand but Honolulu, Hawaii has brewed up a cauldron of Halloween events.  The worlds’ largest maze, at Dole Plantation transforms itself in a haunted version as a fundraiser for local schools.  The Polynesian Cultural Center’s Haunted Lagoon offers haunted canoe rides to experience the tragic story of “The La‘ie Lady” in search of her lost son and to “meet” her murdered husband, back from the grave. The Haunted Stadium at the Aloha Stadium becomes an interactive maze with a graveyard, mad scientist room, horror movie scenes and more. For information on all events visit www.beyondhonolulu.com.

St. Louis offers its trilogy of terror with these scary haunted houses: Lemp Brewery Haunted House opens its brewery’s deep caves to the public to encounter “real” ghosts and spirits.  The Darkness features two floors of fright with high tech animations, special effects, amazing scenes, live actors and an exit through the Monster Museum with horror –like movie props. Creepyworld Haunted House,  located in Fenton, features nine major attractions including the Zombie Paintball Haunted Hayride; Silo-X haunted house; Twisted Torture 3D, a haunted graveyard with eerie swamp and more.

Head across the northern border to Toronto, Ontario and visit the Powerhouse of Terror, located on the grounds of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital in Etobicoke. This attraction challenges human fears such as claustrophobia, spiders, darkness, freaks, zombies and more.  Or go to Casa Loma, a haunted mansion with a scavenger hunt, pumpkin carving and wandering ghouls and goblins.

On the East Coast, Salem, Mass., the Witches of Salem honor their past with the Festival of the Dead, which explores death’s macabre customs, heretical histories, and strange rituals. Program include:  Ghost Hunting 101; The Annual Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo; the Vampires’ Masquerade Ball and The Dumb Supper: Dinner with the Dead.

New Orleans is arguable one of the U.S.’s most haunted cities, known for its cemeteries and voodoo culture. This time of year, the city offers many themed events and haunted tours including the French Quarter Hauntings Tour; the French Quarter Vampire Tour and the French Quarter Voodoo Tour.  Haunted houses are plentiful, the most popular being the Mortuary named the “America’s Scariest Attraction” by the Travel Channel.
